Undertale Soul Virtues, Explained: Seven Colors, Six Fallen Children, One Survivor

The color you got belonged to someone else

Nobody drew up the seven Undertale soul virtues as a personality chart. In the game they come from, they belonged to seven children — and six of those children fell underground and never went home.

Whatever Undertale soul color you got, someone had it before you.

That is the part the test does not tell you, and it changes what the result means. You did not get assigned a nice word. You got matched to a child who is not coming back.

The game never called them virtues

Undertale's own vocabulary does not use the word virtue. It uses Undertale soul traits.

That difference is not trivia. A trait describes you — this is how that person tends to act. A virtue judges you — this is a good way to act. The word virtue comes with a compliment attached. The word trait does not.

So when your result feels wrong — when it hands you a word you would not have picked for yourself — this is usually why. You read it as praise. It was only ever a description.

Most people searching for soul virtues are really searching for the Undertale soul traits, and the two phrases have quietly merged. Nothing is lost in the merge except the tone: Undertale soul traits are neutral, and Undertale soul virtues sound like an award. The seven things being counted are identical.

Throughout this page the two are used interchangeably, because that is how the internet now uses them — but when a definition below sounds colder than you expected, remember it was written as an Undertale soul trait first, and only later read as a virtue.

How we know which color is which

Nobody sat down and assigned these meanings. The game left evidence.

Each of the six children left something behind, and each object says something plain about the person who carried it: a pair of tough gloves. An empty gun and a cowboy hat. Ballet shoes. A torn notebook and a pair of clouded glasses. A burnt pan and a stained apron. A faded ribbon.

You do not need a definition when you have the objects. A gun tells you what that child thought justice required. An apron tells you what that child was doing when it mattered. The seven Undertale soul virtues come down to six kids and the things they were holding.

The seven, one by one

Here are the seven Undertale soul colors, one at a time — what each one is, what people usually mistake it for, and the one it is easiest to confuse with.

Red — Determination

the one still moving

Determination is the refusal to accept that the last attempt was the final one. Optimism has nothing to do with it.

Commonly misread as strength. It is closer to stubbornness that has been forgiven.

Easiest to confuse with Perseverance — the difference is that Perseverance keeps going, while Determination goes back.

Orange — Bravery

tough gloves

Bravery is what you do while the fear is still running.

Commonly misread as fearlessness.

Easiest to confuse with Determination — bravery moves first, determination moves again.

Yellow — Justice

an empty gun and a cowboy hat

Justice here is the willingness to hold a standard even when it costs someone.

Commonly misread as fairness.

Easiest to confuse with Integrity — integrity holds the line for itself, justice holds it for everyone.

Green — Kindness

a burnt pan and a stained apron

Kindness is turning concern into something the other person can actually use.

Commonly misread as niceness.

Easiest to confuse with Patience — patience waits for someone, kindness feeds them.

Cyan — Patience

a faded ribbon

Patience is keeping your own choice intact through the waiting, rather than letting the delay decide for you.

Commonly misread as passivity.

Easiest to confuse with Perseverance — perseverance endures effort, patience endures time.

Blue — Integrity

Integrity is behaving the same when no one is checking and when it costs you something.

Commonly misread as honesty.

Easiest to confuse with Justice — see above.

Purple — Perseverance

a torn notebook and clouded glasses

Perseverance is what is left after the interest has worn off.

Commonly misread as talent.

Easiest to confuse with Determination — the notebook is the giveaway: perseverance writes it down and comes back tomorrow.

Why Justice feels wrong

This is the most common complaint about the whole Undertale soul system, and it is worth taking seriously. One reader put it well:

“Justice definition of this quiz is pretty weird. The quiz treats it as being the executioner and judge, when Justice should also be filled with humility.”— r/Deltarune

That reading is correct. But it is not the test getting it wrong.

The yellow child left behind a gun.

In this world, justice was never the calm weighing of a scale. It was someone deciding that a line had been crossed and acting on it. If the word came out harsher than you expected, that is the source material, not the scoring.

Why almost everyone gets Kindness

The other common complaint: kindness feels too easy to get. As one reader put it — are you a jerk? No? Then you get kindness.

Here is the uncomfortable version.

The green child left an apron and a burnt pan. Of the six, that child is the one who appears to have been trying to feed people, to patch things up, to make the underground a little more survivable.

That child died too.

Kindness got no special treatment in this story. It did not buy an exit, it did not earn a rescue, and it did not stop anything. It is still the Undertale soul color the largest number of people walk away with. Whether that says something flattering about the people taking the test, or something bleak about how little kindness protects you, is genuinely up to you.

Determination is the only one still moving

Six colors ended up in six coffins. Red did not.

Red is the heart that is still moving on your screen. It is the one you steer, the one that takes every hit, and the one that comes back after it stops.

Determination is not the best of the seven. It is the one that would not stay dead.

And this is why the game treats it differently from the other six. Saving and reloading — the plainest button-press in the whole game — is written into the story as determination itself. Every time you undo an ending you did not like, you are using it. Some characters notice.

If you got Determination, you did not get “the strongest virtue.” Your Undertale soul is the one defined by refusing to accept an outcome.

Why a “Soul Virtues Extractor” makes sense

The name sounds invented until you know the rule the whole story rests on.

The monsters are sealed underground behind a barrier, and the barrier gives way to one thing only: seven human souls.

The king already has six.

In this world, extraction is the plot. Souls are gathered because a gathered soul is one seventh of a door, and nothing opens until the set is complete — which means every extraction before the last one buys nothing and still costs a child.

So Soul Virtues Extractor turns out to be the most accurate name a personality test could carry. When you sit down and answer the questions, you are volunteering your Undertale soul for the seventh slot.

Why everyone is posting their colors

An Undertale soul color is the fastest identity label there is. You do not have to explain it, argue for it, or write a paragraph about yourself — you post one square and people know where to put you.

But plenty of quizzes give you a label and nobody posts those. What makes this one travel is that the seven colors already have weight. Nobody invented them for a quiz. They came attached to six endings that did not go well, in a game a lot of people are still not over ten years later.

And then there is the simplest reason of all, the one people say out loud: I want to see what my friends get. Nobody takes this to learn about themselves. They take it to find out who they match with, who they are the opposite of, and who in the group got the one nobody expected.

Questions people keep asking

Why is every one of my virtues above 50%?

Because these are not slices of one pie. Each Undertale soul virtue is scored on its own, so they do not have to add up to anything. A profile where everything sits above half means your answers carried most of these signals at once — read the ranking, not the raw numbers.

My first and second are 3% apart. Which one am I?

Both. A gap that small describes you better than any tiebreaker could: you run on two signals that take turns depending on the situation. The pairs that sit close together are usually the ones that are easy to confuse in the first place — determination and perseverance, justice and integrity, kindness and patience.

Is my lowest score a flaw?

No. A low signal means your answers did not lean on it, not that you lack it. The six Undertale soul children did not fail at the other six virtues; they were simply remembered for one.

I retook it and got something different. Which one is real?

Both, and the change is the useful part. These questions ask what you tend to do, and what you tend to do moves with the week you are having. If two colors keep swapping places across retakes, those two are your actual Undertale soul pair.
